Tran Quoc Pagoda – the 1000 years sacred pagoda on the side of West Lake

Tran Quoc Pagoda is located at a small island near the southeastern of West Lake (Tay Ho District), it is about 3Km away from the Dragon Hotel to the east. Tran Quoc Pagoda has 1500 years of history, the oldest buddhist in Thang Long – Ha Noi. The architecture is the subtle combination between a peaceful and beautiful landscape and the quiet ambiance of West Lake‘s surface. Being the Buddihist center of the Thang Long Capital (old Ha Noi) during the age of Ly and Tran. Because of these historical and architectural values, Tran Quoc Pagoda is famous as a sacred buddhist residence; it attracts many tourists to pay a visit.

Being a green island located on the West Lake, Tran Quoc Pagoda nowadays is considered as one of the sacred Buddhist places not only by its terrain, but also by the history associated with the country, with the Buddha Thang Long – Hanoi. Those who came to visit were surprised by the quiet space, the poetic beauty of this “lotus”, floating on the surface of West Lake.

The harmonious combination between majesty, ancient and the elegant landscape within the quiet of a vast lake, the pagoda is considered to be the Buddhist center of the Thang Long capital in the Ly and Tran dynasties.

Tran Quoc pagoda was often the place where kings go to see and worship on the full moon and Tet holiday. Especially in the Ly and Tran dynasties, many palaces were built here, such as Thuy Hoa palace, Ham Nguyen palace for the relaxation of the king.

The lords of Trinh turned this place into a residence of the king when going out. After the time where Trinh lords were destroyed, the king Le Chieu Thong ordered to burn every place where Trinh lords lived. Thanks to the protection of the people living in the ward, Le’s soldiers only burned the rooms built on rafts around the pagoda built by Trinh lords for the eunuchs and maids, while the pagoda still remained intact.

With a history of over a thousand years, being the capital of Buddhism in the Ly – Tran dynasties, Tran Quoc Pagoda is considered to be a famous place in ancient times and even in Ha Noi nowadays.
